Homebrew Failure

So I tried to brew my first batch of beer. I boiled the water, made the wort (basically the beer prefermentation) and then I fermented the beer for a week. I collected numerous bottles so that I can bottle the beer. I made 5 gallons of it which equates to 53 12 oz bottles. The beer tasted good when I tried after fermentation and I was ready to add sugar and transfer the beer into the bottling bucket and then to the bottles.

Now a lot of you don't know but the packet of sugar that they gave me for my first beer looks a lot like the packet for making a sanitizing solution. So instead of adding sugar to the beer I added sanitizing solution. I feel like the stupidest man alive.

I have pouted and mourned the lost of my beer. Today I have ordered another set of ingredients and will make that batch as soon as I can. This time I will clearly mark the sanitizing solution.

Round Two will come shortly.

New Things

Wow it has been a long time since I updated this thing. So I will try to update the two people who read this so they know the latest and greatest.

I have done stand up comedy now 3 times. The first time was good, the second time was okay and I learned a lot. The third time was awesome. I took more time to prepare and practice and I think it really paid off. I have officially signed up for 6 more times in 2009 so if anyone here is listening then I will make sure to post the dates.

Christmas is now over and my amazing wife purchased a beer making kit for me. Today I brewed my first batch and I can only pray that it turns out good. My friend Joe came over and we tried to figure it out together. It took a couple of hours but it is fermenting now so hopefully it will be ready by next week.

I am starting with H&R Block in January. That should be fun and it will certainly provide us with some extra cash.

I can't think of anything else going on but when I do I will try to post it. Happy New Year!

Stand Up Comedy

Last night was the night that I finally did stand up. All I wanted was someone to laugh beyond my friends and family. And it happened!

I was beyond nervous and I had prepared far more than I had ever prepared for any sermon. And it paid off. After my 5 minutes were up I was relieved and the only thought was "That's it?" I could say so much more.

To all my family, friends and co workers who came, THANK YOU! You made it so much easier on me.

And now for anyone who would like to see me I will be on again so keep reading.

When is it time to move?

I am not an expert, nor do I even want to be one. But I recently read a very disturbing post from my older brother who lives in this horrific neighborhood and I feel it is time for them to move.

Yes the market sucks. Yes houses are expensive in California (Where he lives). And yes there is such a thing as trying to time the market out to get the best deal.

Marc Blair Presents:
You Know It's Time To Move When...
- You can watch the evening news headline "Gang Violence in California" and see your house in the background.
- Your neighbor has been dead for a week and no one knew about it.
- Your neighbor, whom you share a garage with, hosts a homeless man in that garage and the homeless man urinates on your stuff.
- A murder happened next door to you
- You see a "neighbor" has stolen your bike to get to work, but he returned it.
- A local resident backs into your parents car and drives off as fast as he can.
- The public fist fights and drunkenness repeatedly in the parking lot.

I would say that these are "signs" telling you to move. They could be signs telling you that the area you live in could be considered by experts as "unsafe".

If anyone doesn't believe me you can check out my brothers site

Please pray for them as they try to find a new place to live.

Life

Not much has happened this year but Jess and I are still doing good. Apparently the Seminary is going to send my diploma in the mail so I won't have to worry about walking in may. I am so glad about that.

Jess and I have started to hike on weekends. For anyone who knows me this is the strangest and most bizarre thing you have ever read. However we have hiked for several weekends now and I do enjoy it. Especially now because all the wildflowers are out in Arizona and the desert is so green this time of year.

I spent a few days in Denver and New York City in February for work. The only real news there is that New York City still sucks and Denver is a great town. However I went to the American International Toy Fair in New York and that is well worth any trip.

I think that is about it. I hope everyone is well.

It's official

Today I got my first comfirmation that I will be doing a stand up comedy routine in May. That's right it is time to answer the all encompassing question of..."Is Marc Blair really funny?" This has always been in the back of my mind as something I should try and so I am going to try it and see what happens.

Worst-case scenario? I get heckled and I am tortured for 5 minutes. Best case scenario? Chris Rock is the opening act for Marc Blair's HBO Special: "Don't grope your co-worker."

If anyone reading this is in town, all two of you, then I will be performing at the Comedy Spot on May 25th at 10 PM. Yes I know the time sucks but what can you say.

More information about this will come later.

Reaction

Today I came from a friends memorial service. It was earlier this week I received a phone call telling me that a my friend had committed suicide. John Scholz was a friend from work and a man who was an all around great person. Later in the week I read in the newspaper that he had died through "alcohol complications". Which seemed to raise more questions than it helped to answer.

The memorial service was standing room only, filled with friends and family and family of friends. It was a tribute to a very social person who loved being around people. John enjoyed the finer things in life like martini's, wine, and cigars, in which we shared a few. He was also a fan of the obscure things in life, like Welsh cuisine and B rated vampire movies produced in Europe.

He would take all of us from work to a place called "Harvey's Wineburger". A whole in the wall with no windows but a really unique and tasty burger. Every year he held the "Hat Party." Where everyone would bring an ornament to decorate the tree and wear some random hat. (Anything but a baseball cap.)

John was a fun man and really intelligent. I learned a lot from him. He welcomed everyone who came to his home and loved to get to know anyone and everyone in the room. I will miss talking with him. I will miss my friend.
